I don’t get paid for these product endorsements, you know

on January 2, 2006

Hello, happy 2006 y’all. How was your Christmas/Channukah/Holiday of your choice?

I spent mine up in Virginia with the family. We had a great time watching a bunch of Law and Order and eating Jelly Bellies from a big flavor assortment. I was the only one brave enough to try the Jalapeño, but I don’t recommend ’em. Momo and Detroit came up with me, and they had a great time running around the house and being freaked out by my Mom’s cats (Ming and Maggie.)

Of course I must mention the things I got for Christmas:
All of the Director’s Label DVDs that I didn’t own already.
Some Little Lulu books.
Singing in the Rain.
Masters of Russian Animation vol. 1.

Eleanor got a new Powerbook a few weeks ago, but I’m pretty sure I’ve used it more than her at this point – I actually ended up taking it to Virginia over Christmas, so I could work on the infernal coupon book. It’s pretty sad that this little machine that you can put on your lap is faster and more powerful than my big noisy G4 that I’ve had since ’01. Also, you can bring it into a coffeeshop, and magically be on the internet via invisible waves in the air. They’ve come up with crazy things in the last five years.

Eleanor, Antar and I haven’t actually opened our presents to each other – Eleanor is requesting a short delay while Eleanor gets over the cold she picked up in Arizona, and finishes a bit more present buying/making. So we still have our little Savannah Christmas tree up, with bunches of presents underneath. Our Christmas season is going to last a bit longer than normal, and really, what’s wrong with that?

The Media Play in our town is going out of business (I think the whole chain is,) so they’ve been having crazy sales recently, everything 40% to 60% off. I went in meaning to buy presents for other people, but somehow came out with an armload of DVDs only for myself – A couple of Studio Ghibli movies, a bunch of Ingmar Bergman, and a few other Criterion disks.

I’ll go now, because my rampant consumerism disgusts even me.

More Set to Sea than you can shake a stick at. Seriously.

on December 14, 2005

Hey, here’s something ego-flattering! These guys do a weekly podcast about webcomics, and they covered Set to Sea in last week’s episode. Speaking of Set to Sea, there should be a new panel up quite soon… hopefully tomorrow. And here’s one last bit of Set to Sea junk from the pen of David Yoder. Oh, that scamp.

Something I’ve meant to link to for a while, but straight up forgotten: My friend Chris Wright finally has a website. So now you’ll be able to see for yourself who I’ve been ripping off for so long. He’s also been posting some fantastic pages on his livejournal recently, so check ’em out.

We made hummus for dinner today, which is quite easy, if you have three things:
1.- A food processor (which we didn’t, the first time we tried making hummus – it was still quite edible, but very lumpy)
2.- A store that stocks tahini (Sesame paste – we found it at the local hippy grocery store, Brighter Day)
3.- Twenty four hours notice, so you can give your chick peas a good overnight soaking.

If you can get your hands on those three things, all you need is maybe 50¢ worth of chick peas, a lemon, and a clove or two of garlic. It turned out awesomely delicious. Especially with toasted pita bread, lettuce, tomato, and olives.

Kitten Popularity Poll

on December 7, 2005

I’ve been thinking of redesigning my site again recently, and separating it out into three different main sections: comics, an illustration portfolio, and blog stuff. Here are some sketches I’m working on for the main page:

They still need some work – I’m concerned they might look a little more “kid friendly” than I’m intending. How will it all come together? Wait and see.

For some reason, our kitten Detroit Pepperoni seems to have become one of the most popular kittens on the internet. I’ve been getting a ton of hits from Google’s image search, because Detroit shows up twice on the first page!

We like Christmas

on December 6, 2005

Here’s a very small drawing I did today for the back of the Christmas cards me and Eleanor are making:

I won’t show you the front of the Christmas cards, because that would be spoiling it. I’m sure it’ll show up online sooner or later.

I took Eleanor to the dentist today, where she finally got her (tiny) cavity filled. She had fun for the next couple hours rubbing her numb mouth and cheek on me. It poured all afternoon, but apparently my mom’s house in Virginia got a couple inches of snow – the one thing I miss living down south. We had “creole” catfish for dinner, and spent all night assembling Christmas cards while watching the Simpsons. Oh, and we hung up some lights around the house, too!

Set to Sea 28

on December 5, 2005

The story so far…

Who saw this coming!?!

Eleanor and I’ve been pretty productive recently. I spent the morning researching ships and drawing the new Set to Sea panel, and Eleanor finished up a pitch for a kid’s comic. Then we went off for pizza and a movie with Antar and David Yoder – that new black and white George Clooney movie. It was very pleasant, dry and slow-paced. Then we spent the evening working on Christmas cards.
