Set to Sea pg. 105

on July 2, 2010

Fantagraphics has a preview/preorder page up now for the Set to Sea book. This was pretty cute: They have a little video of someone getting “hands-on” with a copy, which I’ll attempt to embed below, wish me luck.

•My friend Joey’s book “Cavemen in Space” got a thoughtful review in our local weekly, the Flagpole.

•Joe Lambert had one of his exquisitely-made little sketchbooks going around at Heroes Con, with a “Celestial Bodies, Gods, Giants and Colossus” theme. A bunch of us Indie Islanders did some sketches, and they’re pretty sweet. I particularly like Patrick Dean’s and David (no, the good one) Mack’s .

•Oh yeah, I got a Twitter, if you’re into that. Apparently I wasn’t spending enough time on the internet yet.

•Happy 4th, if you’re in the States!

Set to Sea pg. 104

on July 2, 2010

I missed Wednesday’s update, so I think I’ll post a 2nd panel up in a little bit.

•Unpleasant factoid about a one of comics Golden Age pioneers, via a recently rediscovered lawsuit court transcript – DC going after one of earliest Superman knockoffs, drawn by none other than a young Will Eisner. The slant being, in his later years, Eisner had presented himself as manning up during testimony and admitting that he had more or less directly copied Superman at the behest of his publisher (despite pressure and threats of career repercussions,) costing them the court case. He had even, much later, drawn a thinly-veiled autobio comic depicting the incident in that light. But in the court transcript: not exactly. I wonder if Eisner had revised his own memory and really believed in his own, more honorable, version of events? I don’t think anyone would’ve faulted a 22 year old too harshly.

•I’m excited about Kevin Huizenga’s new book.

Set to Sea pg. 103

on June 28, 2010

After a year of talking about it, Eleanor and I are shopping for a house! Our current rental is splendid but oh-so-small. We’re both sick and tired of trashing our living room/studio/computer room every time we do some silkscreening or other messy projects. So, slowly but surely, we take another step into “adulthood.”

Edit: Just noticed that Fantagraphics has a preview/preorder page up now for the Set to Sea book!

My brain sure has been trying to come up with excuses for me not to do any drawing recently.

Set to Sea pg. 101

• A little late on this: the audio for this Heroescon panel I was on is online. It was me, Roger Langridge, and Jim Rugg talking about “craft and process,” moderated by Dustin Harbin. I was operating on like 3 hours of sleep and several cups of coffee, so I’m almost totally incoherent; all of my sentences are peppered with “likes” and usually trail off with “I don’t know.” I’m still trying to sort out my ideas on comics process, in the wake of Set to Sea, which took so many years to finish – trying to figure out the healthiest mindset for making art. Should I really be placing so much value on using the “right” tools (old-fashioned nib pens), making the “right” sort of marks (labor-intensive crosshatching)? I’ll probably talk about it more in the near future.

• Our local art supply store was giving away a display rack, so I snagged it. I’m not sure what it was originally supposed to hold, but now it’s displaying some of the pretty stapled comics that were getting lost on our bookshelves.
