Set to Sea # negative something

on November 6, 2006

The story so far…

No, the story hasn’t taken a weird, surrealistic turn. I actually decided to pause at this critical juncture to do a little retroactive filling-in and editing of the prior story. This panel is part of a small sequence that I’ll shortly be inserting all the way back in the bar scene at the beginning.

I’m not really fond of showing everybody the piecemeal, sausage-making-like process of putting Set to Sea together… but I guess that’s why you’re reading this! The final story should be a little stronger for the changes, and hopefully everybody will pretend I knew what I was doing from the start.

Set to Sea 57

The story so far…

Holy god, I have eaten half of my body weight in Halloween candy in the last couple days.

We went to a concert last night when I got a surprise email that Todd Webb‘s band Seamonster was playing Flicker. It was very nice. I wish we could’ve hung out with Todd a little more.

If you want to see a picture of Eleanor and me in the world’s crappiest Halloween costume, go here. Or you could just look at one very cute unicorn baby.

Set to Sea 56

The story so far…

Our Halloween:

  • Candy: About 5 pounds of Pixie Sticks, Butterfingers, Nerds, Baby Ruths, and Reese’s cups.
  • Decorations: Shiny purple bat garland and a green ghost on the front door.
  • Music: A medley of Halloween favorites (yes, The Monster Mash got played at least half a dozen times)
  • Pumpkins: 2 – one by the sidewalk with a scared expression being lassoed, and another by the door looking evil and holding the other end of the lasso.
  • Trick-or-Treaters: 5 very tiny kids – probably first-timers. They were so shy they would only take one piece of candy, so we had to urge them to take more.

A little later in the evening we went out with our friends Erin and Patrick to goggle at the costumes. Erin was a cheerleader witch, Patrick was a surprisingly terrifying Wolfman Jimmy Olsen. I threw on an old black robe and red-lined cape I had lying around from Halloweens Past, and only later realized i was dressed almost exactly like the vampire flip-doll Eleanor made me for my birthday.

We’re definitely going to have to try harder on our costumes next year – there were some good ones out there. Once we saw two different sets of Mario and Luigis, one a pair of boys, the other a pair of girls – run into each other on the street. Surprisingly, there was no antimatter-type explosion.

The story so far…

Eleanor’s parents came and went and hopefully we all had a very pleasant time. We got some pumpkins out at J&J;’s flea market, and Eleanor and I carved them this evening, and baked up the pumpkin seeds. I don’t think we’ll be going out anywhere this Halloween, but maybe some kids will come by for candy.

Sashimi is good.

on October 25, 2006

Eleanor and I have been eating a lot of fish recently.

Elo’s folks are here for a couple days’ visit. Hopefully we’ll get to hit most of our (still reasonably small) list of Athens favorites while they’re here.

SPX went pretty well. If you stopped by the table, thanks for coming out! We were pretty busy at the table for a good chunk of both days. I still feel like i didn’t get to see nearly as many people as I had hoped to see, or pick up all the books I should have. The funky layout of the new Marriott venue definitely wasn’t as conducive to hanging out.

I decided to sit down and once and for all thumb out the rest of Set to Sea before I wrote myself too far into a corner. I was thinking I was about 2/3 of the way done, but now it’s looking like I’m not even halfway! Eleanor scoffed at me. It’s all very disheartening.

More soon!
