Echo City State of the Union Address

on December 31, 2014

Hi everyone! I posted this on my Patreon page, but figured it should go here as well.

Well, seeing as it’s December 31st, it seems increasingly unlikely that Chapter 3 of Margo Maloo is going to start in December after all! I’d feel weird about taking any money from Patreon this month when I haven’t given you anything in return, so if you’re a patron, I’m going to tweak the settings so you won’t be charged for December.

I’ve had a pretty interesting year!

February – Launched Margo Maloo!
July – Went to California for the first time ever, and went to my first (maybe last?) San Diego Comic-Con.
September – started co-writing a kids’ comic with my wife. (Flop to the Top – it’ll be out from Toon Books in 2015).
~AND~ December – Quit my day job!

So, that last one was a biggie. I loved my job – I’ve been a deli manager at our local co-op grocery store – Daily Groceries, here in Athens – for the last four years. I hate to leave in a lot of ways – it was a warm, healthy working environment with great co-workers (check it out if you’re in the area!) And trying to make a living off of art is everything you’ve heard – I know, I’ve tried it in the past.

Getting such a good response from my Patreon campaign, and having a deal for this kids comic I’m co-creating with Eleanor (and its tight, tight deadlines) is what persuaded me to take this leap. And it is a leap – I’m by no means guaranteed to be getting anywhere near a living wage off of comics in 2015.

Work on Flop to the Top should be wrapping up by the beginning of January (it, of course, is taking a little longer than expected). After that, I’ll be be back drawing Margo Maloo twice as hard. After all – it’s my day job now.

Thanks for sticking around – and I mean it.

Pirates ahoy

on November 12, 2014

I drew a comic for the new issue of Spongebob Comics (#38) which should be hitting your local comic shop today! Joey Weiser wrote it! And no, I can never stop drawing ships, apparently. This one was a lot of fun! There’s cosplay involved.

The Ghost in the Post complete!

on November 11, 2014

That’s the end of The Ghost in the Post, the 2nd chapter of Margo Maloo! Thanks for reading. Chapter 3 starts in December! In the meantime, I’ll still be posting behind the scenes Margo stuff over at my Patreon, if you’re so inclined – and I’ll be tweeting and tumblring and what-not. Stay tuned!

My book tour*

on November 5, 2014

Now that Set to Sea is (hopefully!) in your local comic shop / bookstore, of course I have to do a little “book tour!” If you want to pick up a copy, get it signed, or just say hello, here’s what I’ll be doing this weekend:

Athens, GA – Friday, November 7th, 6:30pm at Avid Books.

Atlanta, GA – Saturday, November 8th, 3pm at Criminal Records, with the lovely Eleanor Davis.

*Book tour may only include driving downtown and up to Atlanta.

Set to sea again with me

on October 24, 2014

Hey, my first graphic novel, Set to Sea, is finally back in print! The hardback’s been sold out for over a year – I’ve been having fun watching the secondhand prices rise to ridiculous levels on Amazon. But Fantagraphics has finally brought out this snazzy new paperback, and I did a brand new wraparound cover for it. It’s very blue. So, so, blue. We had to work hard to get it this blue, with weeks of color samples going back and forth – I’m sure the designers over at Fantagraphics all hate me now.

If you click on that, it’ll take you to the Fanta page for the book, with a preview and a little video and all the blurbs you can eat, like the nice review it got by NPR and New York Magazine. It’s pretty different from Margo Maloo (and not suitable for little kids), but maybe you’ll take a look?
