Apologies for the spotty posting of late. I've been busy wrapping up the last bits of work for the Set to Sea book! So once that's out of the way, it should be a straight shoot to the finish line. I'm going to aim for posting the last panel right around when the book gets released in July. You know, so you can rush right from your computer to the bookstore, cash in hand.

Hey! That shadow puppet show happened over the weekend, and came off well! I've watched those guys turn a maybe unappealing prospect (it's an adaptation of a Pueblo myth, the stuff of dry, earnest elementary school film strips) into a beautiful, funny little show. I'm excited to see what's next.

Speaking of the puppet troupe, member Michele Chidester made this comic. It's about the internet.

What's up around here? The weather's finally getting nice again, so we've been taking long walks to soak up the sunshine and trying to drive out the winter doldrums. I'm helping Eleanor get ready for another shadow puppet performance, this Sunday. We went to this free showing of "Enter the Dragon," and the lack of human empathy therein made Eleanor feel upset. We've been going to figure drawing sessions every Weds. over at the UGA art building. I've broken out the big newsprint pads and charcoal for the first time since my SCAD days, just to switch it up, get my hands all charcoaly again.

And the inking Set to Sea crawls ever-nearer the finish line.

Three little Secret Science Alliance-related things:

• SSA won in the "Best Graphic Novel" in an online kids' book award called the "Cybils."

• Here's a pretty cute sketch of Greta. Since Joey helped to make the book, I guess it probably doesn't count as fan art.

• There's an video interview with Eleanor and other SSA cohorts up at TCJ.com right now, part 1 here, part 2 here. I'm far too embarrassed to watch it myself.

I did an album cover for a band called the Unwelcome Guests (out of Buffalo NY,) and it's out now! The Unwelcome Guests do a sort of folk punk/hardcore rock thing, you should check it out if that sounds like your scene.

The album is called Don't Go Swimming, on Kiss of Death Records. The popularity of vinyl releases is a real boon for artists, I've always wanted to do one. There's a cd release, too. For the cd, the cover is folded into quarters, and unfolds to almost-lp size.

Almost forgot:

The book that Eleanor and I worked on together, The Secret Science Alliance, got a good review at The Comic Journal, "one of 2009's most significant releases," the man said. I think that might be the first "comics blogosphere" review of SSA. I guess we've arrived!

Also, the 2nd printing reached American shores a few weeks ago, so the book's back in stock at Amazon.

... I'm just sayin.

Now that our internet's fixed, I can stop pirating our neighbors' intermittent wifi, and get back to updating Set to Sea!

Our from-way-back-in-our-SCAD-days buddy Wook-Jin (Hunter) Clark's book just hit the stands: The Return of King Doug.

It was written by some animation screenwriter guys, but it's a fun twist on the "prophesied savior of the fantasy realm" genre with a pleasantly light touch. And the art is just bonkers. I'm looking forward to the craziness that will happen when Hunter writes his own book, but this is a good start!

Hey, apologies for the double post if you're friended to Eleanor - but she and her friend Katherine Guillen are having a joint show at the Los Angeles Giant Robot, starting this weekend. If you're in the vicinity, you should go say "hi" to them at the opening this Saturday. I've seen some of the amazing jam pictures they've been making, so should you.
