Want to know who's who in the Journal Comic? Here you go.
Drew Weing,
your not-so-humble narrator. Born in Lexington, Virginia,
recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.
Majored in Sequential Art (cartooning for you civilians.) Currently employed as a
"graphic designer," designing ads for one of those freebie local coupon books. Was
previously employed at an orthodontist's office, doing computer-type filework, and
the like. I guess you'd probably describe me as a "shy extrovert." Meaning, if you
don't know me very well, I'm that quiet guy in the corner. If you do know
me, I'm the guy who won't shut up and is always bouncing off the walls.
Antar Ellis,
my room- and studio-mate. Despite the fact that we have been living together
(amid various configurations of other friends) for over five years, I can assure
you we are both strictly heterosexual. Born in Plainsfield, New Jersey, also majored
in Sequential at SCAD. We were roommates in Freshman year, and have stuck together since.
He's working at an ice cream shop and making minicomics on the side right
now. Antar is more socially capable than I, but he's still a geek. He's now got his own
website.
Eleanor Davis,
my girlfriend! She's still going to SCAD right now, double majoring in Sequential Art and
Illustration. She's a vegan who's into bicycling, emo music, and Highwater books. She's also
an inch taller than me. But we get along pretty well. Hopefully she'll put together a website soon,
so you can see her fantastic cartooning work.
Jerry Stanford,
close friend. Yet another SCAD Sequential major. Jerry came to SCAD a year after
Antar and I. Unlike us young bohemian bachelors, Jerry's in his thirties and married,
which makes things interesting. Jerry also designs advertisements, and is doing
webcomics and minicomics on the side. Jerry spent several years in "regular
jobs" like retail, and is now trying to live his dream as a cartoonist.
I consider him sort of our older, wiser comrade. He's got his own
website
full of comics and other goodies.
Penny,
Jerry's wife. I'm not sure what she thinks of us "comic geeks." I know she'd
much rather see Jerry spend his money on practical things, as opposed to comics,
and she'd prefer he had a decent, money-making career. And we bore her to tears
with our comic talk. But, Penny's got a fine sense of humor and the ability to cut
Jerry down in his tracks if he gets out of line.
Dean,
is this dude that everybody knows, somehow. Right now he's finishing up his sequential
degree at SCAD. You can check out some of his stuff at
Flintlock Studios. He's pretty opinionated.
Jon,
friend and former owner of The Empire, which was a downtown Savannah comics shop where
almost everyone I know hung out. Unfortunately, Jon was forced to close the Empire down a little before
the shop's first anniversary, and relocate to Kentucky. Jon's had a pretty long career in comics - writing
his own small-press series for a bit, selling on the Southeast convention
circuits, and running the shop. I'm sure he'll manage to get back on his feet.
Rose,
friend from my SCAD days and yet another Sequential major. She grew up in Florida, and
is currently down in Orlando trying to eke out a living in retail. She's got her own
website, where you can see her comics and
prints. She's a bit bi-polar. I apologize for this lousy drawing of her, and I'll try to get
a better likeness if she comes back to Savannah anytime soon.
Jenny,
friend from my SCAD days. She's an Architecture Major, and we were also roommates for the
better part of two years. She's from Minnesota, and is currently back there trying to make
a go of the architecture thing. She's pretty self-sufficient.
Seth,
my mysterious Coupon Book boss. He's got a penchant for calling at bad times. Hopefully,
if he ever stumbles across this website, he won't fire me.
